FAQs

I have no sailing experience. Can I still learn to sail?

YES! Approximately 40% of our students have no experience. They come with a desire to learn and a desire to begin a lifelong dream of sailing, and that’s all you need.

What should I bring to Sailing School?

You should bring your class packet, a water bottle, lunch and snacks, and a positive and fun attitude.

Am I really going to learn how to sail in just 2 weekends?

Absolutely! With a maximum of four students per class, each student receives a lot of hands-on time. How well you handle the boat, is part of your grade, so your instructor is going to make sure you are comfortable with what you are doing.

Is there a minimum or maximum age for Sailing School?

We require a minimum of 18 years old for group lessons. Sailors 14 – 18 years of age may be accepted with a parent or guardian for private instruction/classes. We do not accept students younger than 14. The school reserves the right to refuse instruction and/or certification to any minor if the instructor feels it is necessary.

What is the American Sailing Association?

The American Sailing Association instruction is the oldest and, in our opinion, the best sailing instruction available. In addition, upon certification, ASA credentials are recognized worldwide. This enables you to sail with major charter companies, many of which offer discounts to ASA members. A sailboat owner with ASA certification is offered reduced premiums by most all insurance companies…let your agent know that you have certification.

Why should I choose ASA certifications over any other system?

What type of vessels are used for training?

Bluenose Sailing School currently instructs on a Jeanneau 379. From time to time, a class will be put on a boat in our charter fleet. All vessels are well equipped with all safety equipment according to the Coast Guard (CG) requirements. Boat sizes range from 34 to 41 feet.

Is advanced study required?

Yes, we highly recommend reading through the course material before class. After receiving your deposit, we send you the textbook and other pertinent information. Students should read and come to class prepared to learn.

Will you teach me on my boat?

Yes! We are happy to provide private instruction on your boat for an additional fee. The vessel owner is responsible for having all safety gear as required by the Coast Guard. Rate vary depending on classes. Bluenose Sailing School does not charge dockage during sailing school when the boat is docked here at the marina.

How will weather conditions affect my training?

We do sail in the rain; however, safety is always our first consideration. We will not sail in conditions that threaten the crew or vessel. The captain has the final word – No Exception! If we are unable to sail, instruction will carry on in the classroom until weather permits sea time. We are not responsible for weather impacts on classes.

What methods of payment do you accept?

VISA, Mastercard, personal check, Travelers Checks, or cash. Checks should be made payable to Bluenose Sailing School. Payment in full is required to secure your spot. See our cancellation policy for details.

What is your cancellation policy?

If a scheduling problem should arise Bluenose Sailing School must be notified 30 days in advance. There are only 2-4 students per class and when 1 drops out, it impacts the rest of the class. Work schedules, sitter schedules, and other like schedules are to be worked out in advance of signing up. If Bluenose Sailing School is notified outside more than 30 days before the start of class, Bluenose Sailing School will refund your class fee less $150 cancellation fee for 101/103/104. All other course cancellations are subject to higher fees due to course material costs.
