Women on the Water

This five-session program run by women for women provides an ideal, low-pressure, and fun way to learn to sail. Enjoy evening sails on Narragansett Bay with other women and become a competent sailor along the way. By the end of the course you will be able to skipper a 24-37ft keelboat in light to moderate winds (up to 15 knots) and sea conditions, and understand basic sailing terminology, boat parts, helm commands, fundamental sail trim, basic navigation, points of sail, and essential safety requirements.

Each session involves a short “chalk talk” to understand the theory of sailing followed by up to 2 hours on the water learning practical skills and having fun along the way.

The first two sessions will be on the Bluenose 24 daysailer, where you will learn basic sail trim, steering with a tiller, tacking and gybing, points of sail, and docking the boat.

The last three sessions will be on our well-equipped Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 379, where you will get a taste of the cruising lifestyle and learn to raise and lower the sails, tacking and gybing a larger boat, steering with a wheel, reefing, anchoring, trimming sails for different points of the wind, reading a compass, using electronic instruments, man overboard procedures, maneuvering under power, and mixing cocktails.

Operating a sailing school requires careful coordination of the number of students, boats, and instructors. Last-minute changes create considerable disruption, which may result in the entire course being cancelled if the student threshold is not met. We request that you let us know immediately if you need to change or cancel your reservation for any reason. We encourage you to take out trip cancellation insurance in the event unforeseen circumstances cause you to cancel.

A deposit of $500 is required to reserve a sailing course or private lesson with Bluenose Sailing School, and final payment is required 30 days prior to the start of the course.

If you cancel more than 30 days prior to the start of the class, we will issue a refund, less a $150 cancellation fee, or issue you a credit for an alternate course. There are no refunds if you cancel within 30 days of the start of the course, unless we can find an alternate person to take your spot, in which case we will issue a 50% refund or a 50% credit toward an alternate course. All course material related costs (e.g. books, postage, etc.) are non-refundable once the materials have been shipped.

Bluenose Sailing School reserves the right to cancel or delay courses due to weather, boat availability, staff issues, or if the student threshold is not met for a specific class. If Bluenose Sailing School cancels a class, we will endeavor to make up the class or will issue a credit for a future course. Cancellations by the school can happen at short notice, up to and including the day of the course, depending on conditions.
