ADVANCED COASTAL CRUISING – ASA 106
Learn to safely operate a 30’ to 50’ sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters, day or night, in any weather. Visit Newport, Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard with an instructor onboard.
This 5-day advanced course will provide you with the skills to confidently navigate coastal waters in all conditions. The course can be taught on your own boat or on one of Bluenose Yachts’ late model Jeanneaus with an instructor on board for the entire course.
At the beginning of the course, you will study weather forecasts and tides before creating a cruise itinerary for the week. You will learn how to create passage plans, enter waypoints, calculate the length and duration of a trip, determine current and depth for different states of tide, select suitable anchorages, etc. The course includes an overnight sail and entering a port in the dark. Practice man overboard drills, learn how to reduce sail in heavy winds, and understand the finer points of sail trim.
The actual itinerary will depend on weather and tides (just like real cruising) but may include Newport, Block Island, Cuttyhunk, Martha’s Vineyard, Buzzards Bay, and Long Island.
After successfully completing this course, you will earn your ASA 106 Advanced Cruising Certification. This course will provide you with the essential skills to skipper a boat up to 50ft in coastal waters in all conditions, day or night.
